Here’s how the story goes:

A young, busy married couple, found themselves stuck taking their turn hosting the family grandfather. When the energetic couple, who would rather be focused on themselves, found themselves distracted at the grandfather’s inability to eat without drooling, slurping his food, or breaking dishes.

In fact, they were so annoyed, they gave him an old earthenware bowl to eat out of and moved him over to eat behind the kitchen stove where they wouldn’t have to see him or hear him.

This seemed to suit them fine, and the grandfather ate quietly with his tears as company.

One day, as those days often come to us, the couple’s son, now a bubbly 4 year old, was making a trough on the kitchen floor. Stunned, the husband questioned the child about it:

“What are you doing there?” asked the father.

“I am making a little trough,” answered the child, “for father and mother to eat out of when I am big.”

“The man and the wife looked at each other for a while, and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything.” (Quoted from the source: The Complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales, “The Old Man and His Grandson,” pg. 363)

What’s the moral of the story?  One moral I found was that when we treat others the way we want to be treated, a very nice ripple effect takes place and we can enjoy the benefits as unexpected opportunities are realized!

Just imagine…the husband and the wife may be the next millionaires by inventing a new line of “Dignity Dining Ware!!

P.S. I think that includes treating ourselves kindly… and even finding new people to help which is hard to do in a busy world, but well worth it — even if you do it just because doing the right thing feels goooooood!

Your life might not have spindle pricks, poison apples, or frogs to kiss but I’m guessing you probably have your share of tough times and good times.  But, if your life isn’t all roses, aren’t you doing something wrong?

Unfortunately, a lot of voices out there seem to put most of the blame on you if your life doesn’t include a free pass to Club Med. President Uchtdorf sends you and me a reality check:

“Sometimes we need a reminder that life was never all sunshine and roses for the fairy-tale princesses. ….each princess had to overcome adversity before she reached her happily ever after.”

Take heart when you seem to hit life’s hard spots, create a great support network, and keep your perspective set on using your experiences as stepping stones to your happily ever after!

Motivational products or presentations can be a lot like fireworks:  spectacular, get you focused, and get you pumped-up and maybe even patriotic. But what happens when the fireworks fade from memory? Exactly.

Bruce Lee hit on something critical to motivation…Emotional Intelligence or your Intrinsic (Inner) Drive. It is NOT the same as emptying your mind and obeying whatever pops into it! Obviously a martial artist can’t do or learn his art if his/her mind is a blank slate. On the contrary, their minds are keenly trained with martial art skills, as are their bodies. So what is he talking about when he says “empty your mind” or “be like water” yet his motivational drive is through the roof?

I believe he means empty your mind of trash, useless goop, and misguided ego pursuits (etc., etc., etc.). Notice he said “be the water” rather than “go with the flow!”

Train and educate your mind with best always, then use it as water… a great dynamic resivoir of strategic knowledge and wisdom fine-tuned by discipline of your Emotional Intelligence able to strategically negotiate your journey, creating your own flow.  In my practice, I call it Life Trekking Mental Toughness™ (www.LifeTrekkingCoach.com).  As a Life Trekkingologist™ and Master Life Trekking Coach®, I find Bruce Lee’s unique Life Trekking™ fascinating!!
